All That Hip Hop, Poetry & Jazz - Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - $0.00 - East Village
ALL THAT! Hip Hop, Poetry & Jazz is an open jam session for hiphop, poetry and jazz. It brings together emcees, poets and musicians from diverse musical and racial backgrounds in a forum that is open creatively but structured so that you can have critically accclaimed jazz musicians such as Antonio Hart and legends like Weldon Irvine, performers like the Roots, Erykah Badu, O.C., and Rahzel as well as unknown emcees and poets performing on the same stage. This evening was created to give young performers a space to work on their craft. The cost of the event is $8.00 to be paid at the door. Join Social Circles for a trip to the famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe and get blown away by the budding talent inside. You never know who you will see on stage!

Hot Cocoa & Cookies @ City Bakery - Thursday, January 03, 2008 - $0.00 - Chelsea
Chocolate Lovers will think they’ve found heaven after that first sip of City Bakery’s liquid-chocolate, hot chocolate. It truly is to die for, and will definitely warm the soul during a chilly winter day. There are also several delectable sweets worth mentioning to pair with your hot chocolate like home-made marshmallows and double chocolate-chip cookies that will melt in your mouth. Hmmm.. What better way to treat yourself during the early cold days of winter.

Starry Nights @ Museum of Natural History - Friday, January 04, 2008 - $0.00 - Upper West Side
For the full New York City glitz factor, live jazz beneath the glorious Hayden Sphere at the Rose Center for Earth and Space is spot on. Just off Central Park and housed in quite possibly the most awesome space centre in the world, it makes for a dazzling way to kick off your weekend. On the first Friday of the month a collection of jazz musicians plays for two hours in the fabulous airy surroundings of the Rose Center. Regular bands include the Hilton Ruiz Quartet, the Vinicius Cantuaria Quintet, Randy Weston’s African Rhythm’s Quintet, the Steve Wilson Quartet and the Cecil Payne Quintet. In good cocktail hour style, a bar serves drinks and tapas. The concerts are free, though we suggest you combine your drinking with a visit to the space show if you haven’t done so before. The Rose Center is the space section of the American Museum of Natural History, which is located beside Central Park on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. This month features Dave Stryker & Blue to the Bone. Guitarist Dave Stryker who established himself as part of New Yorks music scene in the 1980s before going on tour with organist Jack McDuffs group. Stryker has been awarded three jazz grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and has released 14 CD’s since 1990. NOTE: The Museum’s suggested admission is $14.00 for adults.

BYOB French Dinner @ Ivo & Lulu - Saturday, January 05, 2008 - $0.00 - Nolita
Bring a bottle of your favorite French wine and join your friends at Social Circles for a cozy French bistro dinner at Ivo & Lulu. It’s difficult not to become a regular at this dimly-lit sliver of a storefront restaurant. The owners (who cook, serve and bus) are sincere schmoozers who cultivate a dinner-party vibe in their narrow, art-lined dining room. Like perfect hosts, they make introductions between the closely-arranged tables, then politely excuse themselves to the cubbyhole kitchen to prepare your meal.

Georges Seurat: The Drawings @ MoMA - Sunday, January 06, 2008 - $0.00 - Midtown
Once described as ’the most beautiful painter’s drawings in existence, Georges Seurat’s mysterious and luminous works on paper played a crucial role in his short, vibrant career. This comprehensive exhibition—the first in almost twenty-five years to focus exclusively on Seurat’s drawings—will present over 135 works, primarily the artists incomparable conté drawings along with a small selection of oil sketches and paintings. Surveying the artist’s entire oeuvre, from his academic training through the emergence and elaboration of his unique methods to the studies made for his monumental canvases (such as the renowned A Sunday on La Grande Jatte), the exhibition will also present important new research on his artistic strategies and materials. Join Social Circles for a wonderful Sunday afternoon at the MoMA for this exhibition that closes January 7, 2008.

Ping Pong & Pool @ The Fat Cat - Saturday, January 10, 2008 - $20.00 - West Village
Calling all pool sharks and ping pong fanatics! Whether you prefer to shoot pool, spend time playing table tennis or both, this is the event for you. Great pool halls are the ones with lots of brass, oak, and tables with those frilly leather pocket, right? The kind of joint where you introduce yourself as Mad Dog Sharky the Cat and no one bats an eye? Nowadays, such places feel contrived, as the gruff hearts of most old-time pool sharks have likely stopped beating. Which is what makes the un-saloon-ish Fat Cat Billiards the ideal place to hang out, have a drink, and talk plenty of smack over a few rounds of eight ball at a bargain. Located underground, it has the ratty psychedelic feel of a saltwater aquarium circa 1976. The 12 pool tables, though, are all kept in top shape. This is sure to be a fun, energy-filled great night out with Social Circles.

Supper on St. Marks @ Klong - Sunday, January 13, 2008 - $0.00 - East Village
Tucked away beneath the frenetic fury and tattooed pedestrians of St. Mark’s Place, this East village eatery fuses classic Thai cuisine with modern NYC-chic. The Klong menu includes standard Thai staples like Satay, Pad Thai, and numerous curries, while also offering more adventuresome dishes like Herbal Tea-Smoked Half Chicken, Lotus Root Beef, and Mussel Pineapple Curry. Fuerzabruta @ The Daryl Roth Theatre - Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - $62.00 - Union Square
Fuerzabruta, is one of the most unique shows you’ll ever see. Fuerzabruta is a celebration of pure physicality, where performers move seamlessly between three stages - ground , air and underwater - to a thumping score thatll make you feel as if you’re in an experimental Paris nightclub. Sexy, exhilarating and breath-taking to say the least. There are people who see the show that dance and stomp and get caught up in the physical parts, while some just watch with their mouths hanging open says co-creator Diqui James. The audience is obliged to stand during the performance, but really, you’d be giving the same amount of standing ovations anyway. So join the gang from Social Circles for an evening not to be missed!

The New Museum of Contemporary Art - Thursday, January 24, 2008 - $0.00 - Bowery
The New Museum is a stone building with intricately carved columns and arches over big, sunny floor to ceiling windows. It blends in perfectly with the rest architecture in the area.
The gallery space is a long narrow room that has been divided up into several smaller cubicle-like spaces. The dividing walls, along with the wide columns that punctuate the gallery, make for an unusual effect. Although individual rooms feel quite small, the number of rooms makes the gallery seem to go on, somewhat like a maze. This museum is geared towards people with a serious interest in contemporary art. We will meet up at the Museum for an evening of art and interesting conversation!
