Figure al Fresco: Beginner Figure Drawing - Wednesday, July 02, 2008 -
Join members of SC who are not at work for an afternoon of traditional figure drawing for beginner and advanced students. Models strike a series of poses, beginning with short, minute-long gestures that you will be able to capture in fast, impromptu sketches. The poses lengthen to five and ten minutes, and ends with a 20-minute pose. You can work in black and white using pencil and/or charcoal. Artist Enid Braun provides instruction and critiques. All materials are provided as well!
Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: Twelfth Night - Thursday, July 03, 2008 -
We will meet at the The Municipal Parking Lot at Ludlow and Broome with our dinner in hand and perhaps maybe a bit of wine, grab a chair (since we are there early we should have no problem grabbing a seat) and watch Shakespeares Twelfth Night. We know, a bit strange to watch the wonder of William Shakespeare in a parking lot but we like to try everything! This is a FREE event but please be sure to bring your dinner and drinks and also bring extra cash in case the group wants to go out afterwards since we are off the next day!

NY Philharmonic: FREE Outdoor Concert! - Saturday, July 05, 2008 - Governors Island
We’ll meet up at the ferry with dinner and drinks in hand and take a ride over to Governors Island to watch Bramwell Tovey conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra...for FREE! The Program for the evening is a follows: Rossini Overture to The Italian Girl in Algiers , Copland Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo , Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio espagnol
Chabrier España, and finishing with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. This concert will be followed by fireworks so bring a blanket or a chair and whatever you need for a fantastic evening outdoors with the NY Philharmonic and Social Circles!
Kayaking on the Hudson: FREE! - Sunday, July 06, 2008 - West Side
Social Circles members will join instructors at the 71st Street Soccer Field at Riverside Park south for a FREE 20-minute training, and then explore the Hudson River first hand. Please wear a bathing suit or shorts and a t-shirt, and know how to swim. Why not check this free event out? This is a free event but we do ask that you bring cash in case the group decides to go out afterwards for a bite to eat!!
Tour of Louis Armstrong Home & Concert - Tuesday, July 08, 2008 - Corona, Queens
Louis Armstrong was born in a poor section of New Orleans known as “the Battlefield” on August 4, 1901. By the time of his death in 1971, the man known around the world as Satchmo was widely recognized as a founding father of jazz – a uniquely American art form. His influence, as an artist and cultural icon, is universal, unmatched, and very much alive today. Join Social Circles as we jopurney to the home of the great Satchmo. The Ray Vega Quintet will celebrate Louis Armstrong’s traditional birthday with a FREE concert at the Louis Armstrong House. During the concert, we will take the opportunity to take a tour of the Louis Armstrong House Museum for the special price of $5. The museum will remain open for tours until 8 pm.

Social Circles will head to Lincoln Center for Midsummer Night Swing featuring "A Loser’s Lounge Night at the Disco" with Disco and the Hustle. We’ll hop on the train to Long Beach, enjoy a lovely breakfast and then walk up to the Boardwalk and check out the Annual Long Beach Arts & Crafts Fair. Take in the beautiful ocean as well the the over 100 vendors along the scenic route. If it’s a nice day bring your beach gear and hit the sand and RELAX with the waves and watch the surfers. Go for a swim or just chill and read a book. Either way it’s a great escape from the city heat!

Beginner Fencing Workshop - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - $32.00 - Upper Manhattan
Fencing originated in the late 1800’s and at one time was a society staple in New York. Today, fencing has quite the following and we have all seen it in the Olympic games. We will suit up and get ready to learn from world-renowned instructors -- who have themselves produced some Olympic caliber athletes. Once you receive the basic instruction you’ll have the opportunity to charge your opponent. Become the person behind the mask and show off your moves in an exclusive Social Circles fencing class. Early Risers Origami Workshop & Brunch - Saturday, July 26, 2008 -
Join us for an fun morning of arts and crafts as we learn the basics of Origami, the ancient Japanese art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). We’ll meet uptown at the Morris-Jumel Mansion and enjoy a few hours of Origami then we’ll swing over to a neighborhood eatery for some brunch! Introduction to Kiteboarding - Sunday, July 27, 2008 - $89.00 - Long Beach, Long Island
We’ll take the train out together to sunny Long Beach and learn the hottest new extreme sport out there...kiteboarding. Personal friend and co-owner of Cosmic Kites, Tim Freyer will be our instructor for this hands on, beginner, first look at Kiteboarding. In this one and a half hour intensive session, Tim will be showing us the basics of kiteboarding, including safety tips and the best way to harness the wind! Then we will be using trainer kites on the beach and hoping we pull them around more than they do us! (FYI - There will be no water entry at this workshop. In August we will offer a second workshop where you will be able to try boarding in the water if you are up to that level). The Charles Mingus Orchestra is an established ensemble that began alternating performances with its older sibling, the Mingus Big Band, during a 14-year tenure at New Yorks Fez Under Time Cafe.
